Preschool.app

Find answers to common questions about our thoughtfully crafted app for young learners.

πŸ“š Content & Curriculum

What About Screen Time?

It’s natural to be concerned about screen time, but not all screen time is created equal. Research shows that interactive, well-designed educational apps can provide significant learning benefits for preschoolers when used correctly.

β€œStudies have found that when preschoolers actively tap, swipe, and respond to content, they form stronger memory traces and understanding.”

Experts recommend that educational apps supplement traditional preschool activities, not replace them entirely. Research confirms that apps focusing on early literacy, phonics, numbers, and vocabulary can actually match or even surpass traditional learning methods when done right.

β€œA 2021 meta-analysis of 36 studies found that digital learning apps had an overall positive effect on young children’s literacy and math skills ... Notably, effects were strongest for preschoolers, suggesting that ages 3–5 reap substantial gains from interactive app experiences.”

Our app is built on research-backed principles, ensuring that screen time is engaging, educational, and developmentally appropriate.

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦ Family Sharing

Can grandparents use this app without repurchasing it?

Yes! Preschool.app fully supports Apple's Family Sharing feature. When you purchase the app once, up to five family members can use it on their devices without buying it again.

This means grandparents, caregivers, and other family members who are part of your Family Sharing group can download and use Preschool.app at no additional cost.

To set up Family Sharing:

  1. Go to Settings on your iOS device
  2. Tap on your name at the top
  3. Select "Family Sharing"
  4. Follow the prompts to add family members

πŸ”’ Keeping Kids in the App

How do I prevent my child from accidentally leaving the app?

Although Preschool.app was designed specifically to temper accidental taps, we recommend using Apple's Guided Access feature for the best experience.

Guided Access keeps your child in the app by temporarily restricting your device to a single app and limiting which features are available. Here's how to enable it:

  1. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Guided Access
  2. Turn on Guided Access
  3. Set a passcode (make sure it's different from your device passcode)
  4. Open Preschool.app
  5. Triple-click the side button (or home button on older devices)
  6. Configure options if needed (disable screen areas, time limits)
  7. Tap Start

To exit Guided Access, triple-click the side/home button again and enter your Guided Access passcode.

πŸ—£οΈ Voice & Pronunciation

Can my child really hear my voice in the app?

Yes! Preschool.app can optionally use Apple's Personal Voice feature to use recordings of your voice within the app.

This feature is:

  • Completely optional
  • Totally private and secure (your voice data never leaves your device)
  • Created using Apple's on-device machine learning

To set up Personal Voice:

  1. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Personal Voice
  2. Follow the prompts to create your voice by reading sample phrases
  3. Once created, you can enable it within Preschool.app's settings

Your child will love hearing your familiar voice as they learn!

How can I improve the experience if I don't create a Personal Voice?

If you opt not to use Personal Voice, you can still enhance the app experience by selecting a high-quality system voice.

We recommend using one of Apple's Premium voices, which sound more natural and engaging for young learners. Here's how to select one:

  1. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Spoken Content > Voices
  2. Select English (or your preferred language)
  3. Tap on Voice
  4. Choose a Premium voice (they'll have "Premium" listed under their names)

Our recommendation: We highly recommend "Zoe" as the Premium voice of choice. Her clear pronunciation and natural intonation make her an excellent option for young children learning language skills.

Premium voices require a one-time download but provide significantly better quality than the standard system voices.

Can I customize how words are pronounced in the app?

Yes! Apple provides a way to customize pronunciations system-wide, which will affect how words are spoken in Preschool.app:

  1. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Spoken Content > Pronunciations
  2. Tap the "+" button to add a new pronunciation
  3. Enter the word or phrase as it's spelled
  4. Enter how you want it to sound phonetically
  5. Save the pronunciation

This is especially helpful for unique names or words that might not be pronounced correctly by default.
